About Lost in the Trip

Hello and welcome!

This is me, Tommy, founder of Lost in the Trip.

A website about journeys into the beautiful and the bizarre. The faraway and the fantastic.

Unusual, quirky, forgotten corners of Europe, Africa, the Americas, Asia and Australasia.

I also like to write about navigating travel and health (and how the right environment can be AMAZING for your health).

I have an autoimmune condition which I now – thanks to some dietary and lifestyle changes – am symptom free from most of the time. You can find out more about that journey on my other site: Gut Heroes.

Terry-Turtle---Lost-in-the-Trip

The picture of me above was taken when I accidentally found myself in Angola, shortly after repatriating a turtle.

I’m not usually this smartly dressed. My usual getup is pirate / beach bum chic.

I’m not making it up about the turtle.

Meet Terry.

What you can expect

The musings and photographic journals of someone utterly obsessed with:

✔️ Abandoned buildings, shipwrecks, and ruins
✔️ Live volcanoes, dormant volcanoes, and jagged skylines
✔️ Caves, caverns, canyons, and dark places
✔️ Foods that will make your mother squirm
✔️ Anything ugly-beautiful: a happy warthog, a factory in a field, a brutalist statue, rain bouncing off a piece of chewing gum, DUNG BEETLES

This isn’t really a backpacking blog (although we do rock backpacks).

My partner and I currently hold down full-time jobs, massive debts, crushing attachments to the machinations of capitalism, and all the stuff that most people deal with.

So most of our explorations take place in the city we love, London.

I lurch into the alleyways and rat-infested parks that you won’t find in the Lonely Planet.

I document the strange scrawlings of forgotten Londoners. The rich tapestry of protest art. The treasure you can find strewn in our canals and walkways (if you take a look at my Instagram, you’ll see what I mean).

But we also relish the chance to head to beautiful, far-flung places that aren’t typically swarming with gawping tourists like us and get away whenever we can.

Our trips are usually hectic, chaotic, overwhelming but utterly rewarding. A big colorful punch in the soul that can have us levitating with joy for months on end afterward.

We usually get antsy after 5 minutes on the beach. We’re not that bothered by fancy restaurants or people fussing over us and can’t stand organised tours.

We relish in anything that’s different from what we’re used to.

This website is for anyone who revels in the beauty of the sights, sounds, tastes, and experiences of the extraordinary and the everyday.

For anyone who wants to do more exploring and maybe wants a tilt in the right direction.

Or indeed, for anyone who has the good sense to stay at home in a comfortable, warm space. Somewhere free from cockroaches, haggling, dysentery, and the campfire guy with the acoustic guitar.

Let’s get lost together, compadre.
